Glasgow School of Art is one of the main independent art schools within Scotland, located on Renfrew Street just off Sauchiehall Street, in the City Centre. Founded in 1845, the current building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and finished in 1909.
The Glasgow School of Art campus now consists of 10 separate buildings, but the 'Mackintosh Building' (known commonly as 'the Mac') remains partly open to the public and offering guided tours. There is a digital design studio which is located off campus, in Bellahouston Park's House for an Art Lover.
The Glasgow School of Art has a large number of international students. The Art School boasts four public exhibition spaces featuring work from both established artists and students. Famous former students include the actor Robbie Coltrane, the lead singer from Scottish band Travis, Fran Healy, and renowned Scottish writer and artist, Alasdair Gray.
