Once upon a time, the Scotland Street School Museum was an actual school which was built by Charles Rennie Mackintosh at the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is one of Glasgow's most outstanding architectural attractions and a museum of school education. It is located in the area of Tradeston, next to the Shields Road Underground station.
The Scotland Street museum takes the visitor back in time to see what school was like in the days of Queen Victoria, at the time of the Second World War, and in the 1950's, thanks to three classrooms which have been reconstructed. There are often family events held at the site along with temporary exhibitions. Refreshments can be had at the Willow Café and the gift shop offers some souvenirs to take home.
The building which houses the Scotland Street School should not be missed by fans of Mackintosh as it represents a perfect example of his architectural style. Within the building visitors can see the Mackintosh room which houses the architect's original plans for the school.
