Whisky is Scotland's national drink, and one of Scotland's most famous exports.
Known worldwide as Scotch Whisky, within Scotland it is referred to just as
whisky. The term "whisky" derives from the Gaelic for 'water of life', uisge
beatha. Whisky produced in Ireland or the United States tends to be called
'whiskey'.
An increasingly popular activity among visitors to Scotland is to learn
about how whisky is produced with whisky distillery tours. The Glengoyne
Distillery is just twelve miles from Glasgow, conveniently located for a day
trip to Loch Lomond. The Glengoyne Distillery Visitors Centre is open throughout
the year for guided tours and whisky tastings.
Glasgow is the perfect location for experimenting with Scotch whisky, as it is home to several specialist whisky pubs and shops. The Uisge Beatha pub is only a 10 minute walk from the Sandyford Hotel, and offers a huge range of over 125 single malts. The Uisge Beatha offers a traditional Scottish atmosphere, and the staff wear kilts!
Glasgow is also home to some specialist whisky shops, ideal for purchasing souvenirs or for adding to your own whisky collection. The Whisky Shop has two outlets in Glasgow's Buchanan Street, in the Buchanan Galleries and Princes Square Shopping Centres, and offers a wide range of single malt whisky, blended whisky, and miniature whisky gift boxes.
