The Citizens Theatre Company was formed in 1943 by a group of Glasgow Citizens including the playwright James Bridie, Dr Tom Honeyman, and Guy McCrone. Although they first performed in the Athenaeum Theatre they moved to the current building in 1945, originally named the Royal Princess's Theatre but later renamed the Citizens Theatre.
The Citizens Theatre stages a lively mix of theatre, dance and musicals, and the theatre is closely involved with the local community, especially offering workshops with young people.
